Rubber Souls, formed in 2016, draws from some of Denver’s most talented musicians (who also happen to be big Beatles fans). They perform around the Denver area to the delight of Beatles’ fans young and old, recreating the beloved Beatles music and arrangements in great detail. Prepare yourself for an evening of epic Beatles covers done by some of the best.
Rubber Souls are:
Mike Massé (lead vocals, piano, guitar) is a YouTube icon and professional musician with a worldwide fanbase, thanks to his widely viewed YouTube channel (165M views). Massé was a public defender for 13 years before quitting his day job to become a full-time musician. His “epic acoustic classic rock” covers have been praised by many of the original artists (Toto called Mike’s acoustic cover of “Africa” their favorite). He has toured as a vocalist with original members of the band Boston. He appeared in a Google ad tribute to Prince during the Grammys. His famous acoustic cover of Toto’s “Africa” was even parodied on TBS’ “American Dad.” He can be seen performing at public and private concerts around the globe, including recent performances in Liverpool. Mike Johnson (lead guitar, vocals), guitarist and composer, has been performing for over 50 years. While he studied classical and electronic music, he was raised on Beatles music and is mainly self-taught in guitar and composition. Mike is the founder and leader of the internationally celebrated “avant-rock” group Thinking Plague, with whom he has written and produced eight CDs, two LPs, and tracks on various compilations. He is also a member of the “experimental folk-jazz-rock” group, Hamster Theatre, with whom he has recorded three studio and one live CDs. Mike has performed all over the U.S. and Europe, and has recorded with The Science Group (France), Yugen (Italy), Fred Frith (Henry Cow), David Shamrock (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), Dave Willey, Janet Feder, and many others. Jon Stubbs (keyboard, guitar, vocals) grew up playing and singing Beatles songs; which has inspired his love of unusual rhythms, soul-penetrating chords, gorgeous melodies, and evocative sounds. Jon often shares Beatles songs with his music students. In addition to Rubber Souls, Jon plays with the bands: Hamster Theatre and Zimbira. Jon is also house bass player for BDT Stage in Boulder, which is currently celebrating its 46th and final season of music theater. Ron Perron (bass, vocals) has been playing bass since he was 15, and has performed with Big Band Jazz ensembles, jazz trios and quartets, and rock and pop bands, in clubs, theaters and concert venues, as well as spending some time in recording studios. From the Concert Club scene in Chicago in the late 70’s, to Denver, Dallas, and LA in the 80’s and 90’s, Ron has a rich history of performance. He has been with thee prog/pomp band Stencil Forest on and off for many years as well. You can hear their last released album, The Abyss, on Spotify, Apple Music, You Tube, etc
Henry Lokay (drums) has been playing and performing for 55+ years. He started playing at an early age and cut his teeth on classic rock but his influences come from a wide variety of styles (Neil Peart, Todd Sucherman, Ringo, Phil Ehart, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, James Bradley Jr.). He studied with some of the pros in the Boston scene during his years at UMass Lowell and had the privilege of coming under the tutelage of jazz great Alan Dawson. He plied his trade in theater and orchestras around the Boston area for a time but has come back to his roots since moving to Colorado, performing in tribute bands Paradise Theatre (Styx) and Forever Man (Clapton). You can check out his work on those band’s FB pages and his own YouTube page.
