The JLFG Competition was established in 2006 with the intention of improving the leadership and teamwork qualities of Phase II trainees whilst at the same time as raising awareness of the RNRMC Field Gun Competition within a new generation of naval recruits.Participation has a positive effect on those who take part by providing an amazing experience that develops robust, dynamic and well-motivated individuals as well as instilling team ethos and a sense of pride amongst all competitors.
Since its launch, JLFG has been so successful that it has been expanded to allow Sea Cadets and affiliated Schools and Colleges (including, most recently, University Technical Colleges) to participate alongside Service teams. This expansion, which seeks to make the competition as inclusive as possible regardless of background, has only been possible through generous charitable donations from the sponsors which help keep team costs to an absolute minimum.
The competition itself is designed to take 16-24 year olds with no previous field gun experience and mould them within 5 days into a competitive team. To achieve this the Royal Navy provides each team with a fully qualified trainer. The training develops team spirit and promotes Naval Service Core Values (Courage, Commitment, Discipline, Respect, Integrity and Loyalty).
