ROUTES to PUBLICATION

A workshop for writers, published or not. Learn how to avoid the pitfalls and confidently choose your route to publication.
About this Event

How does a writer become an author? Should you find a publisher or self-publish?

In this interactive session you will learn the pros and cons of different routes to publication. We will highlight some of the pitfalls so you can chose the route that is right for you.

Whether you find a publisher or self-publish, the process has many stages. Learn what these are, what is involved, which of the tasks you can do yourself. We will explain the important elements of creating a good product: editing, interior-file creation and cover-file creation. We will give you a realistic idea of how much your book might make and when you should (or should not!) pay for skilled help.

By the end of the session you will know what jobs are involved in publishing and you will have a personal action plan.

FEEDBACK from a previous session

"Well explained about the pitfalls and traps of publishing."

"Presenters were friendly, knowledgebale and approachable" Jane

"Very recpetive to questions and responsive to the audience. I learnt a lot." Liz

"The session was full of information and tips."

This session is brought to you by Sheffield Authors members Steve Kay and Carmel Page.

Steve Kay’s first novel The Evergreen in Red and White was longlisted for the Historical Novel Society's Indie awards in 2015. He then got the bug and has gone on to publish over 40 books (his own and that of others) through his publishing company 1889 Books.

Carmel Page is a storyteller. In 2017, a fairy godmother granted her wish to be published when the History Press offered her a book deal to write Yorkshire Folk Tales for Children. Since then she has also self-published Little More and the Wantley Dragon because dragons are important, especially ones that live on the edge of Sheffield.

Workshop 14 is upstairs in Orchard Square, Sheffield S1 2FB. It can be accessed by the lift in Waterstones, but there are still a few steps down to the workshop.

If you have any support needs or wish people to know your pronouns please let us know in advance or on the day.
