In 2022, the Arts & Culture selection committee consisting of seven local volunteers ranked 30 submissions for public art installations to be installed in the roundabouts located at Canyon Drive, Morgan Road, Chapel Road and Back’O Beyond. In addition, the City Clerk and the committee counted 540 ballots collected from the public ballot box that was housed at the Community Library Sedona. The four artists awarded contracts are: Susan Kliewer, Don Kennell, James Muir and Mark Feldtkeller. The last piece to be installed along SR179 will be Look in Up by Mark Feldtkeller.Concept: Our culture is consumed with technology. Early cultures looked to the heavens for connection and this piece reminds us to look up more at the skies. Constellations are carved in columns and ancient hieroglyphs are carved into the bases. The base will have a pattern of sacred geometry, which will anchor the columns.
Size: Obelisks are 13, 12 and 11 feet tall. The bases 2 x 3 feet. The center rock is 5 feet tall.
Materials: Travertine stone columns, steel plates, concrete infrastructure and patinaed elements. Constellations are rose quartz and citrine crystals wrapped in copper. A large crystal sits on the center rock.
The ribbon cutting event will be held on Monday, December 15 at 3:00 pm. Meet in the Sedona Methodist Church Parking lot, 110 Indian Cliffs Road, across the street from the Back ‘O Beyond roundabout.
