THE COAST’S FAVOURITE REGATTA
The annual Round Saltspring Race has evolved over 50 years into a whole weekend of celebrations, and has been called “the best regatta on the coast” by participants. Up to 120 boats participate in the Saturday race around the island, from maxi-boats to small club racers. By Friday night the Club docks are alive with activity as boats raft together, flags flying. Because the course offers unique challenges such as tidal currents and variable conditions, it’s a great test of tactics, seamanship, navigation and sailing ability. From year to year, it can be anyone’s race to win.
COURSE
The traditional course around Saltspring Island and the rocky outlying bits is approximately 42 NM in length. For the last 3 years (2022-25), the direction of sailing was determined by the Skipper’s choice. Most of the fleet went clockwise 2023 while all but Strum went counterclockwise 2024 last year. The most important tactical decision is which direction would allow for the best transit of the tidal gate at Sansum Point. For 2024, Strum had a light (8 knot TWS) upwind start, splitting from all boats by going clockwise as we felt we were fast enough to (barely) beat the adverse current at Sansum Point. Wind was moderate (8-12 TWS) A3 conditions from Ruckle Park to Sansum Point which was transitioned with J1. Winds were light (5-8 TWS) from Vesuvius to Strum’s first-to-finish result around 4pm (correcting 2nd overall, a few seconds behind 1st corrected Bandit). Conditions and speed vary from year to year. Over the past years, corrected time for the first place boat has ranged from 6:03:27 to 14:02:57 with Strum finishing as early as 2pm (2018) and latest at midnight (2023).
CABIN
The photo above is taken from Strum’s cabin, swimming distance from the start/finish line. There will be a mandatory crew dinner Friday night here, and everyone gets a bed (sleeping bags provided to reduce laundry duty). We share food costs, but no restaurant is better. This regatta is similar to the Patos Island Race, but May is so much warmer than April.
CREW
If you or someone you know wants to race on Strum for this years Round Saltspring Island Race, you have come to the right place. Reply GOING if you are available, confirmed crew will appear below. Select INTERESTED if you can not commit, and we will contact you if needed. This event is mandatory for Strum's 8 Core-Crew, who must commit prior to Feb01/24. This leaves room for 4 non-core crew. Crew preference is given to those with a valid Safety At Sea certificate, who can help prepare Strum & deliver her to &/or from her private dock on Salt Spring Island.
