About this Event
Come volunteer in Detroit's Largest Park to help restore historic trails, clear invasive species, forge new trails, and build community! Come by yourself or with a crew and help us maintain this lush ecosystem! No prior experience needed!
Each session, we’ll work together in the Rouge park prairie or woods to remove invasive honeysuckle, buckthorn, and other noxious plants to improve the park’s natural beauty, celebrating our efforts with good company, refreshments and camaraderie. Since Rouge Park is 1,184 acres, we rotate work locations. Make sure to register so that we can let you know where we are working on which date! If you are ever having any trouble finding the work crew call our stewardship manager- Antonio : (313)-207-2076
What to wear: We highly recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants and boots to protect against bugs and scratches. We use tools including shovels and pickaxes and walk on somewhat uneven ground that can be muddy - so you definitely want to wear closed shoes that allow for comfort, stability and safety. Hiking boots and/or sneakers are good. Crocs are not ideal. In the summer, especially after a rain, mosquitos can be prolific. We do have some bug spray, face and body protection.. but dress accordingly!
What to bring: a reusable water bottle (yay less plastic water bottles in landfills!), sunprotection (if needed), and a good attitude! Friends of Rouge Park will provide extra water, gloves, tools and trash bags.
