Hindemith’s opera Mathis der Maler is a fictional retelling of the life of Mathis Grünewald, a painter on the run during the Reformation. Hindemith had been fascinated with the artist for some time, and the opera was preceded by a symphony of the same name. In three movements, the composer sets a famous altarpiece by Grünewald to music, angels and demons included. Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is not inspired by anything so tangible. It was dedicated to the pianist Josef Hofmann, who did not dare take on this daunting technical challenge. Rachmaninov himself was the only one to perform his 1909 concerto for many years. As a student, the Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes couldn’t wait to take up the gauntlet, and finally achieved his great goal with a recording in 2023. Finally, La Valse by Ravel waltzes us out of the horrific memories of the Great War.

Dans l'opéra Mathis der Maler, Hindemith romance la vie de Mathis Grünewald, un peintre en fuite pendant la Réforme. L'opéra et la fascination suscitée par cet artiste ont été précédés d'une symphonie du même nom. En trois mouvements, Hindemith dépeint un célèbre retable de Grünewald, anges et démons compris. On ne retrouve cependant aucune source d’inspiration digne de ce nom dans le Troisième Concerto pour piano de Rachmaninov, dédié au pianiste Josef Hofmann, qui n'a pas osé relever l'exploit technique exigé par l’œuvre. Rachmaninov a longtemps été le seul interprète de son concerto de 1909. Depuis ses années d’études, le pianiste norvégien Leif Ove Andsnes était impatient de relever le défi : un grand objectif atteint grâce à son enregistrement de 2023. Enfin, avec La Valse de Ravel, nous dansons en trois temps hors des souvenirs désagréables de la Grande Guerre.

Aan de opera en de fascinatie voor de kunstenaar ging een gelijknamige symfonie vooraf. In drie delen verklankt Hindemith een bekend altaarstuk van Grünewald, engelen en demonen inbegrepen. De Noorse pianist Leif Ove Andsnes kon als student niet wachten om de uitdaging aan te gaan en vinkte dankzij zijn opname uit 2023 eindelijk zijn grote doel af. Met La Valse van Ravel walsen we tenslotte uit de nare herinneringen van de Grote Oorlog.
