About this Event
JOIN US AND MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN ADDRESSING THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON A COMMUNITY IN MOROCCO!
In partnership with the Social Justice Action Team of Follen Church (a Unitarian Universalist Church in Lexington, MA) Curio Spice Co. is raising funds to support a project to help a community of women farmers create resilient agriculture systems and protect their livlihoods which depend on the Damask rose.
This fundraiser is part of a larger effort at Curio Spice Co to raise $17K for the project. Learn more about the general fundraiser here.
At Follen, we'll gather to enjoy Moroccan food and drinks prepared by Curio Spice Co., as well as watch a very short documentary about the women of the rose valley. We will then have a short Q&A talk with Curio's founder, Claire Cheney.
Curio Spice, a local, certified woman-owned business, is supporting The Rose Oasis Project to benefit the community of women farmers growing Damask roses, spices, and herbs in the Mgoun Valley of Morocco. Since 2020 Curio Spice has directly sourced culinary rose products from a women-run co-op in Morocco. The culinary roses, grown 100% organically, are at risk of disappearing due to the effects of climate change. Drought and unpredictable weather threaten this plant that has become essential to the livelihoods of women in this valley. By regenerating the soil, introducing water-saving technology and poly-culture, the Rose Oasis Project serves as a model for desert agricultural communities around the world.
“Your land for growing is in small parcels, but its significance is much greater than the hectare size. That is because it is the ‘laboratory of the future’ for how communities everywhere will need to grow food in a hot, dry world.”
- Gary Nabhan (Renowned Author & Ethnobotanist) speaking of the women farmers of the Mgoun Valley, Morocco.
