Join us to make your own beautiful Flax Rope basket in this exciting new workshop at the Craft Barn. Learn how to use the technique of twining to create a sturdy and functional basket from flax rope, with a flash of natural colour.
You will be able to choose from a selection of pre-dyed rope to personalise the design of your basket (this rope has been hand-dyed by an artisan dyer using natural dyes). A humble rope basket sees at least five 'people' through its life: the flax grower, the spinner, the ropemaker, the basket maker, and of course the final owner.
The Flax rope used is a natural fibre that is relatively soft on the hands when working. No previous experience or specific skills are needed however, it is a busy workshop and you need to twist and manipulate the rope a lot with your hands.
This workshop is led by Laurence Knoop of Splice and Fid, who lives full-time on a narrowboat with his young family. The narrowboat is also his workshop, storefront and vehicle for travelling the waterways of England and Wales. Laurence also leads our Rope Trivet workshop, a great introduction to ropework.
You will aim to take home a finished basket that measures approximately 23 x 23 x 13 cm.
