Rooftop gardens and green walls are creative ways to utilise the space you have to create a beautiful and functional garden.
About this Event

No matter how small your living space is, it is a fundamental requirement of wellbeing to connect with nature’s green spaces and living things.

But with developers creating smaller blocks of land, and more subdivision and infill, we need to think more creatively about how to connect with nature and plants in small spaces at home and work.

Roof top gardens and green walls are creative ways to utilise the space you have to create a beautiful and functional garden.

In this one-day workshop, (held on Thursday, 21 October 2021), you will learn various approaches to combat the challenge of growing a roof-top garden or green wall with South Australia’s high evaporation rates and low humidity.

You will look at systems, plants and substrates that maximise success and limit water usage.

You will also learn how to incorporate a habitat for local flora and fauna in your design that will provide a necessary refuge to a range of native plant and animal species, especially those which are threatened.

Learn to assess and adapt your built environment and associated garden spaces, irrespective of the size and purpose of the space.

  • Consider structural issues to accommodate rooftops and green-walls
  • Explore the challenges of weight, water, drainage and access
  • Consider the interface between your building and garden
  • Explore how plants can influence your home energy footprint
  • Discover how plants can enhance your wellbeing in small spaces such as rooftops, green walls, balconies, and tight narrow spaces

Gain new ideas and a blueprint to make the best of what you already have. Invite your neighbours and explore the possibilities!
