Ronnie's Story:
January 17,2023 Ronnie “Poncho” Gean Craig passed away unexpectedly shy of his 69th birthday. His last act saved multiple lives through organ donation.
Nicknamed “Poncho” from his class of 72’, Ronnie found a love of music and attended Brown Institute of Technology to be a disc jockey, named Syrian Stone. Longing for a home-cooked meal from mom, Ronnie hitchhiked home where he found himself immersed in the world of a car salesman. After working for a few dealerships, he found his home in Duffy’s Classic Cars for 28 years.
Hopeless under a car hood, Ronnie loved learning about cars, and he was able to gain an unmatched knowledge. His humor, giant smile, and vast knowledge is greatly missed at Duffy’s. He helped clients realize their dreams of collector cars, and enjoyed the perks of his career “testing out” classic cars.
Plenty of breakdowns came testing classic cars such as a 1960 Corvette caught fire, or a hood flying off almost clipping Ronnie’s head in a convertible. Wherever the breakdown, it was never in a convenient location. Ronnie lived a life engulfed in his passion through his careers, meeting thousands of car enthusiasts at the dealership or car events.
On a deeper level, Ronnie was a husband, father, and grandfather. Married for over 42 years to his wife Joni, a beautiful family life in a small town Iowa flourished. Their home was the kind that welcomed family and friends to stay for a good time, with the door always open. Wanting a legacy with children, Ronnie and Joni were met with challenges, and not immune to tragedy.
Their first child, Jarod Paul, was born Nov. 15 1985, and died that day. Through immense grief Ronnie and Joni did find success in achieving their dreams, and brought their children Rachel and Adam into the world. Another scare came when Joni was diagnosed with breast cancer leaving Ronnie fearful of a life without Joni. Thankfully, Joni survived her diagnosis. Years later, the road for this family would meet another great challenge with their son Adam.
In 2016 Adam, a recent college graduate, was involved in a shallow diving accident, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Adam, sharing his father’s love of music, aspired to be a musical therapist before the accident. Quadriplegia requires assistance in daily activities with round the clock care. Still living life to the fullest possible, Adam continues to play music, and will be performing at the car show!
With the unexpected loss of Ronnie, Adam has lost a huge support system in his care. This car show is to remember Ronnie, appreciate the things he loved, and fundraise support for his son. Ronnie loved classic cars, but above all, he cherished people. Come join us for a good time on August 24th and celebrate the things we love most!
