JazzMobile is an outreach and recruitment project that sends York jazz faculty and musicians to visit high schools in the GTA. Tailored to meet the needs of each school, JazzMobile offers a combination of performances, talks on jazz history and band clinics. Students get to meet faculty members in York’s renowned jazz studies program and see them in action. Ron Westray, former lead trombonist with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, serves as an engaging front man backed by both student and faculty talent for the performances. Westray launched JazzMobile to raise awareness about the jazz studies program and the Oscar Peterson Scholarships at York, deepen relationships with local schools and foster jazz appreciation among a younger audience. So far, JazzMobile has been a resounding success and we’re bringing it to Hugh’s Room for a free show which everyone can experience!
“The response to our crew in the schools has been nothing short of amazing,” Westray said. “It has been a great experience, meeting music teachers, and so many students who may become York students in the future.” Beth Showalter, head of Arts at Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School, returned the compliment. “Your presentation was eye-opening for our students,” she said. “They especially liked seeing a real university professor in action. The calibre of music was inspiring, even for those not in the music program. There was a definite buzz in my classroom after the performance.”
Ron Westray is a Canadian citizen who was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1970. From 1993 to 2005, he was a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (New York), directed by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. As lead trombonist and arranger, he participated in most of the concerts, tours and recordings of this band over those twelve years. A collaborator of pianist Marcus Roberts since 1991, Ron has also played, toured and recorded with many legendary musicians. Since 2009, he has occupied the Oscar Peterson Chair in Jazz Performance at York University in Toronto where he is an Associate Professor in the Music Department of the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design. Joining Ron are Noam Lemish and Sundar Viswanathan who are part of the York Music Educator Team and no stranger to the Hugh’s Room Stage. Sunday April 28.
Please Note: 296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals to make HRL the best listening room in Toronto!
