'Roll Into Spring' - A Contact Improvisation Mini-Festival in Castlemaine
Advertisement
A lightly facilitated contact improvisation jam weekend in Castlemaine.
Somewhere between a mini-festival, a skills exchange and an extremely long jam session, this event offers CI dancers a chance to practice and share skills, explore, learn and deepen our practice.
And aside from lots of dancing, it's a great chance for us to gather, shake off those winter cobwebs and enjoy a nourishing spring escape in the countryside!
This is a co-created community event. So, if you'd like to contribute by offering a class/workshop, please do! Please send me a message to express interest beforehand, with a description of the class you'd like to offer. In exchange, you will receive a fee & free entry to the entire weekend.
Whether you join as a participant or facilitator, we are all part of making this event awesome. So, we each commit to taking care of ourselves mentally, emotionally and physically to create a safe and enjoyable shared dance space. You can attend as many or as few of the offerings as you like, and rest whenever you need to.

$10
A long-form 'closed' jam which follows a loose 'score' or structure. Don't worry, there is still no 'wrong' or 'right' way of dancing, and there are certainly no 'moves' to learn. It's essentially a facilitated jam.
The Underscore is what we call a 'closed jam' which means we all commit to arriving on time and staying in the space for the entire time (Resting, snacks or toilet breaks are fine).
We'll have an opening circle where we talk through the 'score' of what might happen throughout the jam, a facilitated lead-in, and then a closing 'Harvest' circle where we share and glean what we noticed and learnt.
It's a very beautiful thing, I promise. It's hard to describe, so I encourage you to come along and experience it.
If you've never been to an Underscore before, please arrive early and a take a look at: https://nancystarksmith.com/underscore/)

1pm - 1:30pm Closing Circle 'Harvest'
2pm onwards - Optional picnic lunch (BYO food/location TBC)

LOCATION
Castlemaine Circus is not far from the centre of town. It's at the old secondary school campus at 35 Etty St. Follow the signs to the circus & gymnasium - we'll be in there.
Please consider catching the train or car-pooling. Feel free to post on the event page if looking for a lift. There'll be plenty of us driving in and out of town that you'd be able to get a lift with from the station. It's just a 7 minute cycle or a 20 minute walk from Castlemaine train station.
COST
We are trying to keep this event as affordable and flexible as possible, while still covering the cost of paying for teachers, promotion, and studio hire.
Each session will cost between $10-25. Please bring cash.
Feel free to attend just one, or as many sessions as you like!
Entry will be on a first in best dressed basis. If the venue is full, we may have to turn you away, so please arrive on time for the start of each class.

WHO CAN ATTEND?
This practice weekend is open to all levels of experience including beginners. However, if you've never done any contact improvisation before we suggest trying to get along to a class or two beforehand if you can, to get a sense of the basics before you dive in for the weekend.
We highly recommend that beginners join the foundations class on either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
Children and teenagers are welcome, and must be actively supervised by their carers at all times.
MEALS
Participants will be responsible for organising their own meals, either to bring along each day or to purchase from one of the many eateries nearby. There are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants in Castlemaine to grab lunch or dinner from. On Sunday we invite you to bring/buy lunch for a picnic lunch together after our closing circle.
WHAT TO BRING
Loose comfortable clothing, ideally that covers your elbows and knees (to avoid floor burns). Layers for when warming up and cooling down. Drink bottle and snacks.
ACCOMMODATION
For participants not based in Castlemaine, it will be their own responsibility to organise accommodation. There are lots of options, including Airbnb, caravan parks, motel and hotels.
(Nicola has plenty of space for camping on her bush property 5kms from town - please pm or text her if wanting to take up this offer)
COVID SAFETY
Please be COVID safe: wash hands before and after using the studio and stay home if unwell.
For any further info or questions contact Nicola Beatrix on 0401. 682. 416 or post on the event for group discussion
