About the artist:
If you happened to catch the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra downtown at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in March, you saw a face that is familiar to Nashville ’s Jazz crowd…Playing Lead Trombone and firing up the Encore was Nashville’s own Roland Barber - what a highlight!
This year marks what would be Duke’s 125th birthday, and Roland’s fabulous occasion playing with the Ellington Orchestra has inspired this very special show - which will feature and celebrate the music of Duke Ellington and beyond, and put on display the influence Duke’s music has had on Roland’s playing and career!
Roland has assembled an exciting new quintet - all heavy hitters that are uniquely shaping the Nashville scene. On the keys, hailing from Chicago and bringing a provocative balance of traditionalism and modernity there’s Alex Murphy. On the bass, discover Jack Aylor, aka “Young Prof”. On saxophone, you’ll hear Dan Hitchcock, a gifted improvisor who melds influences of Sidney Bechet, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin and Coltrane, all the while telling stories all his own. And finally, firebrand Christian Burgs will be handling the drums, and if you don’t know about this young man’s dynamic playing - come find out!
Join us for this special occasion, July 6th, 2024 Live at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. World class musicians gathered around world class music for a special one-night-only concert! Get ready for an incredible night of jazz with the Roland Barber Quintet!
