Judging a book by its cover: Why might we be interested in bookbindings on old books? Every binding can tell a story. This talk by guest speaker Dr David Pearson will explore the interest of bindings from various angles, including examples that can be found in Armagh Robinson Library. Dr David Pearson is an internationally recognised expert on historic books, especially around ways they have been bound and owned. His books include English bookbinding styles 1450 – 1800 (2005), Speaking volumes: books with histories (2022) ad Cambridge bookbinding 1450 – 1770 (2023) and he regularly teaches and lectures on these subjects.
He was a librarian by profession, who worked in numerous libraries in London and elsewhere before retiring in 2017 as Director of Culture, Heritage and Libraries for the City of London Corporation.
