Boys, based on Newman’s own family history, is the poignant story of a young Black boy, Alex, who is taken in by local dairy farmers after seeking refuge on their farm when his family is killed by the Klu Klux Klan during the Great Depression. He is then raised alongside the family’s son, Pete. Together, the “brothers” navigate the Jim Crow era in the rural South—a challenge they experience differently because of their different skin colors—and then head off to fight in segregated units in World War II. Through separation, military careers, escalating racial violence and a reunion in South Carolina in 1969, they must confront the complexities of what it means to be Black and White brothers.
