Roderick "Rev" Paulin, a New Orleans native and music educator with a 40+ year career, continues to refine his skills both professionally and personally. His journey began with his father, Ernest "Doc" Paulin, in the city's vibrant brass band scene. This early exposure ignited a lifelong passion for music and education, evident in his illustrious career.
Paulin's resume boasts collaborations with numerous renowned musicians and groups. He's a mainstay at iconic New Orleans venues like Tipitina's, the Maple Leaf Club, Snug Harbor, Preservation Hall, and Mahogany Jazz Hall, consistently contributing to the city's rich musical tapestry. A versatile musician, he excels on both saxophone and clarinet, with his 2024 clarinet debut album, "OLD TO NEW," dedicated to his brother, clarinetist Rickey Paulin, and the pioneers of traditional New Orleans music. He stands as a prominent figure among Black New Orleans clarinetists dedicated to preserving this art form, alongside esteemed figures like Dr. Michael White — 1970’s alum of Doc Paulin’s Brass Band.
Holding degrees from Southern University A&M College (SUBR) and Louisiana State University (LSU) in music education and research, respectively, Paulin is a dedicated educator. He actively engages with students through masterclasses, private lessons, and presentations at music conferences. As Director of Jazz Studies and Applied Saxophone/Clarinet Studies, he imparts the fundamentals of jazz and classical music to aspiring musicians. Following in the footsteps of his mentors, clarinetist Alvin "Mr. Bat" Batiste (SUBR) and saxophonist Edward "Kidd" Jordan (SUNO), both who led jazz programs in neighboring cities for over three decades. Roderick also serves as a faculty member of the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, nurturing the talents of young local jazz musicians.
As a performer, Paulin shines. He is a featured soloist with The Uptown Jazz Orchestra led by composer/producer/trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis for over a decade, contributing to their recordings and accompanying them on world tours. He also holds the position of principal clarinetist with The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band (OTJB) led by vocalist/percussionist Gerald French. The OTJB is dedicated to early New Orleans music. Roderick is a featured soloist and member of The Preservation Hall Brass Band. Furthermore, he leads his own band, Rev and The Congregation, sharing uplifting and inspirational music with young audiences worldwide.
Roderick "Rev" Paulin is a highly sought-after educator and performer, a testament to his enduring dedication to music. As he approaches his 50th year in the music industry, Rev and The Congregation continue to embody the spirit and essence of authentic New Orleans music.
