With French as the official language and strong ties to its colonial past and landlocked by six countries, Burkina Faso is a vibrant mix of cultures with a thriving arts tradition. The country has struggled to grow, with one of the world’s lowest national incomes, and much of the population migrating for employment to neighbours.
The limestone formations of Domes de Fabedougou, shaped over millennia by water and erosion and the craggy chain of cones sculpted by the elements make for a geological fantasyland for trekkers and explorers.
With hippos dwindling in other parts of Africa, Burkina Faso has one of the largest remaining populations, estimated at between 1500 and 2000. The common hippopotamus, recognisable by their barrel-shaped torsos, wide-opening mouths, and hairless bodies, may seem comical in appearance but are considered among the most dangerous animals in the world! With large canine tusks and weighing nearly 1500kg, they can run quite fast on land and can be very aggressive when protecting their young.
Burkina Faso should afford ample opportunity for us to observe the hippo in her natural habitat, from a safe distance of course!
