As a grand finale to National Library Week, we invite you to visit Colonial Williamsburg's John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library for a behind-the-scenes look at our unique and important collections. What draws researchers to the Rockefeller Library? History drawings and photographs that reveal the history of Williamsburg, rare books and manuscripts from the 1700s, media collections, and treasures from Colonial Williamsburg's Corporate Archives documenting nearly 100 years of our institutional history! This open house will serve as the opening of our new exhibition, By Authority: The Printed Word in Eighteenth-Century Williamsburg. Curated by Rivi Feinsilber and Doug Mayo with the assistance of Marianne Martin, the exhibition examines the early evolution of printing in Virginia. Through a variety of objects held by Special Collections, the story of Williamsburg as the center of printing in Virginia is illustrated. Four exhibition cases focus upon the themes of government printing, periodical literature, books and pamphlets, and job printing. This exhibition is free and open to the public during library hours from Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.
Guests are also invited to help us identify individuals depicted within the Albert Durant Photography Collection, a collection of images by Williamsburg's first Black city-licensed photographer that documents activities and individuals in and around Williamsburg during the 1940s and 1950s.
Free parking on site.
