Before reshaping the sound of modern jazz, Robert Glasper was already bending boundaries with a bold, genre-fusing voice. His early albums - Canvas (2005), In My Element (2007), and Double-Booked (2009) - charted a course where jazz, hip-hop, soul, and gospel collided with elegance and innovation.
Canvas introduced Glasper’s lyrical piano style and intricate interplay, blending post-bop roots with soulful modernity. In My Element deepened the personal and spiritual, showcasing his unique ability to merge Herbie Hancock’s legacy with J Dilla’s rhythmic sensibility. By the time Double-Booked arrived, Glasper had fully embraced duality - splitting the album between straight-ahead trio jazz and groove-driven music.
