Robert Eustis:
“You’d think that someone’s already written a good song on every possible topic,
but New Orleans native Robert Eustis proves that isn’t
necessarily so.” — OffBeat Magazine, 2024
Robert Eustis grew up in New Orleans listening to R&B, much of it written
and produced by Allen Toussaint. College led him to Denver, where Texas
songwriters Steven Fromholz and Jerry Jeff Walker played regularly.
At his wife Karen’s suggestion, he started guitar lessons. At a guitar workshop
led by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jorma Kaukonen, Kaukonen said, “When
you play with other people, something magic happens.” The switch was
flipped. The next year, Eustis was in a band and was writing songs.
His first album “Flyin High” was produced by the late Spencer Bohren
(1950-2019). Sidemen included Harry Hardin on violin, Johnny Sansone on
harp, and Spencer’s son André on drums and piano. Spencer fast became
a friend, mentor, and role model.
Robert’s 2nd album (all originals except one cover) was released in the spring
of 2022. Produced by André Bohren, “The Tipping Point” was nominated for
an OffBeat Magazine Best of the Beat Award. Guest players included Aurora
Nealand on soprano sax and accordion, John Fohl on electric and acoustic
guitars, David Pomerleau on bass, and André on drums and piano.
Eustis plays guitar, mandolin, and sings with Father Ron and Friends. He
continues to perform solo, and in various collaborations and one-off projects.
