Robben Ford is renowned as one of the premier electric guitarists in the world, celebrated for his blues prowess and versatility across various musical styles. A five-time Grammy nominee, Ford's illustrious career includes collaborations with a diverse array of legendary artists such as Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Greg Allman, Larry Carlton, Mavis Staples, Brad Paisley, and many others.Born in 1951 in Woodlake, California, and raised in Ukiah, Ford was immersed in music from a young age, influenced by his father, a country and western singer, and his mother, a pianist with a beautiful singing voice. Ford's musical journey began with the saxophone at age ten, but it was the guitar that ultimately captured his heart at thirteen, inspired by the sounds of Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
Throughout the late 1960s, Ford honed his craft by attending iconic performances at the Fillmore and Winterland auditoriums in San Francisco, where he witnessed groundbreaking artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King. His exposure to jazz greats like Paul Desmond, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis further shaped his unique fusion of blues and jazz.
Ford's career took off after high school when he formed The Charles Ford Band with his brothers, leading to tours with Charlie Musselwhite and a pivotal stint with blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon. His collaboration with Joni Mitchell on the "Court and Spark" tour and recordings with The L.A. Express marked a significant milestone, establishing him as a formidable talent.
