About the Headliner- Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley
As a duo, Rob and Trey have received accolades from the likes of NPR (“Two musical phenoms"), Rolling Stone (“Bluegrass aces…Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley shred…’Moonshine Run’ crackles with outlaw attitude and a swampy groove as Ickes and Hensley throw out some dazzling runs and solos…”), No Depression (“Two of the finest musicians playing today”), Vintage Guitar magazine (“An acoustic firestorm…[who] are changing the rules"), Guitar Player magazine (“Dual lightning strikes in a bottle”), Holler (“Speed demon string players”), Premier Guitar magazine (“Two of the hottest country and bluegrass players in the business”) and Folk Alley (“Two brilliant instrumentalists who elevate any song they play to stratospheric levels”). WMOT Radio’s Craig Havighurst has proclaimed, “Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley are the Swiss Army Knife of roots music.”
Noted for their world class musicianship, guitar prowess (Rob & Trey were invited by Eric Clapton to perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2023 in Los Angeles alongside some of the world's greatest guitarists, including Eric himself, John Mayer, Santana, Gary Clark Jr., Billy Gibbons & ZZ Top, Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Jimmy Vaughan, Taj Mahal, Jerry Douglas, John McLoughlin and others), white-hot picking (as Acoustic Guitar puts it: "hot-shot guitar picking at a breakneck pace…steel-string bluegrass with all the intensity of rock 'n' roll"), soulful stone country vocals and top-shelf songwriting, Rob & Trey are authentically the real deal. They are inspired and ingenious artists who each bring so much to the table. When they play together, they are in such lock-step with each other that it’s almost as if their two guitars become just one instrument. They are bold, dynamic, skillful and versatile while cleverly and artfully melding country, rock, bluegrass, blues, jamgrass, Americana, soul and more to create a signature musical blend that is all their own, defying restrictions of genre. Influenced by repertoires as diverse as The Allman Brothers Band, Merle Haggard, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Earl Scruggs, Ray Charles, the Grateful Dead, Little Feat and Buck Owens, it could be said they’re a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, a little bit grassy and a little bit jam band—and it makes for quite a rare and compelling combination.
Rob & Trey have received praise from the likes of legends such as Marty Stuart ("In this ever-changing world of Country Music, it's comforting to know that the real deal still exists") and Merle Haggard ("I'm sure I don't make a true 'critic' since I'm already such a fan, but this album from Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley is a wonderful piece of work. And my songwriting side is truly overwhelmed. Thank you, thank you, thank you.")
Rob & Trey’s list of collaborations is impressive—and long! They’ve teamed with Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Marty Stuart, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rodney Crowell, Little Feat, Taj Mahal (including a live record as members of the Taj Mahal Sextet), Tommy Emmanuel (including releasing an EP and touring together many times), Steve Vai, Leftover Salmon, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jorma Kaukonen, Hot Tuna, Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, David Grisman, Molly Tuttle (on the 2023 BMG A Tribute To The Judds album that also featured Lainey Wilson, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Ashley McBryde & more), Luther Dickinson, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Justin Guip, Alison Brown, Steve Martin and many others.
Rob & Trey are known for blowing the doors off of every venue they play. With each live performance, they deliver a truly explosive, innovative and entertaining show that has received vast acclaim from accomplished musicians, fans, critics and music lovers alike. It’s commonplace for Rob and Trey to receive multiple standing ovations throughout their set in response to their jaw-dropping performances. Their precision as musicians is world-class, top-shelf and truthfully, something to marvel—couple that with Trey’s rich and soulful baritone singing that evokes Merle Haggard one minute and George Jones the next and Rob’s road-schooled high harmonies whose voice hugs every twist and turn of phrase, and it makes for something really special. It’s simple: no one can do what Rob and Trey do the way they do it. Their appeal is truly genre-bending, traveling well beyond the realms of country, bluegrass and Americana on seldom-traveled roads.
Trey, with his other-worldly, in-your-face guitar playing, has received praise from a truly eclectic group of guitar legends spanning multiple worlds of music, including the likes of Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Vai, Mike Campbell, John Petrucci, Steve Wariner, Tommy Emmanuel, Neal Schon, Vince Gill, John 5 and Joe Bonamassa. Trey is being recognized as a leading, influential and mega-talented guitarist by extraordinary players such as this—and as such, he is reaching new artists and fans and exposing them to country, bluegrass and Americana in fresh ways, expanding the reach of country music. Just one example is Stone Temple Pilots lead guitarist Dean DeLeo recently asking Trey to sit in on a Stone Temple Pilots show (to take place on Aug. 31, 2024 at the 12,000-seat Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, GA). Trey will be playing acoustic and electric guitar with the band and Dean has asked him to sing at least one song. In 2023, Trey was a featured player in a piece published by Guitar World magazine titled “6 Blazing Bluegrass Guitarists You Need To Hear.” A native of Johnson City, Tennessee, Trey made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11, performing with Marty Stuart and Earl Scruggs (thanks to an invite from Stuart), and has since appeared on stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Peter Frampton, Charlie Daniels and Old Crow Medicine Show. Hensley was chosen to perform in December 2022 as part of special 2-night-only engagement with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many special guests celebrating the 50 Anniversary of NGDB’s groundbreaking album, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.
Of course, Rob, a native of the San Francisco Bay area and former co-founder of the bluegrass supergroup Blue Highway, is a highly sought-after Dobro master whose impressive live performance and recording credits include Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson (including as a key member of the all-star “house band” for Willie’s 2023 GRAMMY®-nominated album, Bluegrass), Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Josh Turner, Tony Rice and even legendary Van Halen original frontman David Lee Roth, among several others. Rob is a featured guest artist on the Cirque du Soleil Songblazers soundtrack (released Fri. July 19, 2024 via Universal Music Group), joining fellow featured guest artists Dan Tyminski, Tommy Emmanuel & Sam Bush on the album. Rob has also recently lent his signature Dobro work to new recordings by country stars Morgan Wallen and Lee Brice.
Rob and Trey can be seen nationwide on television—each had their own episodes of the Emmy-nominated My Bluegrass Story (produced by the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame) on RFD-TV; David Holt's State of Music on PBS; Opry Live on Circle All Access; and they've been featured multiple times on PBS' Woodsongs. Their music is frequently showcased on Sirius/XM, the nationally syndicated radio program Mountain Stage (on nearly 300 public radio stations across America), the nationally syndicated WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour (on nearly 550 radio stations around the world) and on WSM-AM Radio worldwide from the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville, where they perform often.
The latest critically acclaimed Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley album, Living In A Song (2023), was produced by GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/engineer/songwriter Brent Maher (The Judds, Elvis Presley, Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, Tina Turner). Highlighting the songcraft of Ickes & Hensley like never before, the project features the title cut, “Deeper Than A Dirt Road,” and “Way Downtown.” Living In A Song was a Top 5 Bluegrass album, Top 10 Americana album and Top 40 Current Country album. Maher also produced Rob & Trey’s previous release, World Full of Blues (2019), which found the dynamic duo branching out with new instrumentation including a horn section and Hammond B3 Organ, as well as inventive collaborations with the legendary Vince Gill and Taj Mahal, after starting their careers with more stripped-down acoustic projects such as their GRAMMY®-nominated debut, Before The Sun Goes Down, and lauded follow-up, The Country Blues.
On October 27, 2023, an album titled A Tribute To The Judds (produced by Brent Maher and executive produced by Joe Galante and Renee Bell) was released worldwide by BMG. It included a collaboration between Rob, Trey, and fellow bluegrass star Molly Tuttle on "John Deere Tractor" alongside an all-star cast consisting of Lainey Wilson, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton, Cody Johnson, Jelly Roll and more. On March 8, 2024, the Taj Mahal Sextet (of which Ickes & Hensley are members) released the live record, Swingin' Live At The Church In Tulsa, to acclaim from SPIN, Performing Songwriter, No Depression and more. The Taj Mahal Sextet is nominated for a 2025 GRAMMY® Award: Swingin' Live At The Church In Tulsa in nominated in the Best Traditional Blues Album category.
The reigning IBMA Guitar Player of the Year, Trey is once again nominated in that category in 2024 for the IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards. He is also a performer on a IBMA Song of the Year contender: "Forever Young" (by Daniel Grindstaff with Paul Brewster, Dolly Parton) as well as being a performer on two separate Collaborative Recording of the Year nominees: "Forever Young" and "Bluegrass Radio" (Steve Martin and Alison Brown). Rob is going for an unprecedented Win #16 as a IBMA Resophonic Guitar Player of the Year nominee once more in 2024.
Rob & Trey tour extensively year in and year out. Throughout 2023 and 2024, they've performed all over America on their Living In A Song Tour, including a significant stretch last year touring with Rodney Crowell behind his GRAMMY®-nominated The Chicago Sessions album (those shows featured stand-alone sets from Rob & Trey before they slid into Rodney’s band for a large block of the show). They performed live with Rodney on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country to launch the release of The Chicago Sessions in the spring of 2023. R&T also joined Tommy Emmanuel for a 17-date tour in 2024 (touring with Tommy is a frequent happening as Tommy considers Rob and Trey two of his favorite guitar players). Additionally, Rob & Trey have toured with the legendary Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 2023 and 2024.
Rob and Trey are enjoying an undeniable groundswell movement in their career between admiration from legendary artists and their musical peers, an unmatched work ethic when it comes to preparation and touring, and an expanding footprint in the music world via various recording projects and an ever-growing combined social media reach of approximately 1/3 of a million followers. As has always been the case, their live shows continue to generate exceptional reactions from fans and music lovers.
