Join the Mann Art Gallery on October 2nd from 6:30 to 8:30 PM for an engaging Artist Talk with Rob Froese, the exhibiting artist currently featured at the gallery. This event is part of our Culture Days celebrations and offers a unique opportunity to hear from an internationally celebrated ceramic artist with deep roots in the Treaty 4 area, now known as Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.Rob Froese's journey in ceramics began in the 1980s under the mentorship of the influential potter Jack Sures at the University of Regina. His pursuit of mastery took him to Japan, where he apprenticed in ceramic studios for 15 years, immersing himself in the philosophy and aesthetics of Japanese pottery. After returning to Canada, Froese earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2015.
In his work, Froese draws on Japanese philosophy and the concept of wabi-sabi, exploring the beauty in imperfection and the impermanence of life. His artistic range is impressive, encompassing both functional pottery and sculptural objects that reflect a deep respect for tradition and a bold exploration of form and material.
This Artist Talk is a must-attend for anyone interested in ceramics, Japanese philosophy, or contemporary art. Come and be inspired by Froese's insights and experiences, and gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and thought behind his work.
