Patrick Swayze stars as Dalton, a legendary bouncer with a PhD in philosophy from NYU, who is recruited from NYC to clean-up The Double Deuce, a notoriously rowdy bar in Jasper, Missouri. When Dalton’s efforts to transform The Double Deuce catch the attention of a ruthless businessman, he must call in his mentor (Sam Elliott) to save the bar and town. Lampooned by critics upon its release but later achieving cult status, Road House is a sharp mix of absurdity and sincerity inspired by true events in Skidmore, Missouri. This screening will be followed by a community conversation led by the State Historical Society of Missouri exploring topics such as journalism, true crime, and bar culture.
A community conversation will follow with Richard King, owner of Cooper’s Landing and former owner of the Blue Note, and photographer Don Shrubshell, who captured the gruesome scene after the town’s bully was killed in broad daylight. State Historical Society of Missouri newspaper librarian Katie Ziegler leads the talk on journalism, true crime, and Missouri’s bar culture.
