Recognizing, Implementation, and Treatment of Deteriorating Patients for Registered Nurses (RN/NA)

This is a two-day course, that is aimed at developing the Registered Nurses knowledge and skills in monitoring recognising and gaining skills in the treatment of deteriorating patients. The nurse will develop a logical system of assessment using ABCDE relating this to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and giving both rationale for specific assessment and development of the required skills to meet the patients changing needs.

Develops knowledge in how to perform the airway assessment and deal with potential obstruction, maneuvers, and equipment to rectify and treat the problem

Develops knowledge and understanding of the different types of oxygen devices and equipment used, and treatment required, including nasal-phargel suction and the need for emergency intubation and ventilation via ET tube and tracheostomy. We will discuss the use of BIPAP,optiflow and CPAP how it works, specific care and management including chest drains and the rational for use and how to interoperate arterial blood gases, and the difference between VBG and ABG .

The use and setting up of cardiac monitoring, Interoperating and recognising lethal rhythms and the treatment required including taking and rezoning changes on 12 lead ECG including lethal rhythms such as MI, Heart block, AF, and atrial flutter.

Relating to anatomy and physiology with their specific treatment, interventions, and care that is required and by using role play and scenarios, we will look at why certain deteriorating signs are missed and how this can be prevented in the workplace

We will also discuss the five types of shock and discuss the compensating mechanisms and specific deteriorating signs that can occur and relating them to the specific Interventions medications and monitoring required for all potential lethal and shock events

We discuss the need to reassess your patient to see if interventions work, or require modification changed or continue specific care Throughout the course we will discuss and relate the legal and professional issues which relate to accountability, delegation duty of care, delegation, Informed consent, best interest and safe guarding responsibilities in relation to care and assessment and discuss limitation to role

Learning Outcomes

  • The rational of using ABCDE assessment and why we use look listen feel in each assessment
  • Revision of Vital Signs the potential signs of deteriorating and implications to health intervention, monitoring and investigations required
  • Development of knowledge and ability to apply to practice for CPAP BIPAP and ventilation
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge in AIrway insertion Adjunts, Nasal phagel suction and Air entery
  • Understanding the use of chest drains and management and care requred
  • Understanding and interoperating Arterial and Venous Blood gases
  • Understand the position of electrodes for 3 & 5 lead monitoring
  • Able to perform a 12 lead ECG correctly and detect abnormalities
  • Understanding and interoperating Cardiac arrhythmias and lethal rhythms and specific treatment and care
  • Understand the types of shick and the care and management reqiured
  • Able to discuss the reasons why we die and the care investigations and management to prevent or reverse their occurance
  • understand the relevance of urine output and fliiud balance charts to health and detecting change
  • Abnormal blood results and actions required
  • Understanding the difference between diliurem,dehydration and demention in relation to ANCVPU assessment
  • Able to reconise the deteriating signs that can be seen in Vital signs and actions required
  • Function of the primary and seconday assessment Recognition and understanding of life threatening conditions and events with the specific treatment and care required
  • Discussing the role of accountability, delegation and understanding limitation to your ownrole
  • Handover Escalation using SBAR to Doctor and handover and documentation requirements
  • ยท Rational for why mistakes happen and prevention of them
  • Completion of a patient assessment rational for care and assessment of ABCDE competency to prove knowledge learnt
