The Ngaio Marsh Awards, in association with Whanganui District Libraries and Lit – Whanganui Booklovers Festival, invites booklovers to a thrilling evening of criminally good conversation with four talented North Island storytellers. Crime writing has come a long way since Dame Ngaio Marsh set a handful of her popular Inspector Alleyn tales among the landscapes of Aotearoa, shifting from puzzling entertainments to modern tales delving deeply into people, places, and psychology.
Ngaios Best Novel winner Charity Norman will chair a fascinating panel discussion with pathologist and past Ngaios Best Non-Fiction finalist Cynric Temple-Camp, Manawatū mystery writer and Queer Indie Award nominee GB Ralph, and TV producer and past Ngaios Best First Novel finalist Stephen Johnson

Charity Norman is a Hawke's Bay writer who was born in Uganda and worked as a lawyer in northern England before immigrating to Aotearoa in 2002. Her novel AFTER THE FALL was a World Book Night title. Her seventh book, REMEMBER ME, won the 2023 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Novel. Her writing has appeared in DARK DEEDS DOWN UNDER 2. Her latest novel, HOME TRUTHS, is a thriller about the impact of online conspiracy theories.
Cynric Temple-Camp is a forensic pathologist based in Manawatū, originally from South Africa, who spent the early part of his career in war-torn Rhodesia examining the dead and dying. He came to New Zealand in the 1970s and has since worked on over 2000 cases. Cynric's first two non-fiction books were bestsellers, THE CAUSE OF DEATH and THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. His latest book is THE FINAL DIAGNOSIS.
GB Ralph is an engineering consultant in Palmerston North and author of cosy mysteries and gay romcoms. The second novel in his Milverton Mysteries series, POISON AT PENSHAW HALL, was a #1 Audible category bestseller, and was nominated for Best Overall Mystery/Thriller in the 2023 Queer Indie Awards. His latest novel is DEATH IN DOUGLAS GLADE, with a fourth mystery starring Addison Harper, FRIGHT NIGHT ON STAGE RIGHT due for publication later in 2025.
Stephen Johnson is an Australian-born television news and sports producer who has swapped the TV studio for a writer’s garret overlooking the Tamaki River. His debut TUGGA'S MOB, a finalist for the 2020 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best First Novel, was inspired by three seasons working as a tour guide on double-decker buses around Europe in the 1980s. Stephen's Spotlight TV crew of sleuths has also appeared in the DARK DEEDS DOWN UNDER 2 anthology. His latest crime novel is the legal thriller NO REPEATS.
