About this Event
LA River Public Art Project | www.LARiverPublicArtProject.org
In preparation for our visit to The Great Wall (1978) in March, we have arranged a VIP tour at MOCA Geffen to learn more about an extraordinary local public artist, Judith Baca and her relentless pursuit of world peace and social justice. Baca began her collaborative, portable mural World Wall: A Vision of the Future Without Fear in 1987. An ambitious, utopian, and international project, World Wall is rooted in the philosophy that in order to achieve world peace, we must first be able to envision it. All nine panels are at MOCA in an enveloping installation. Significantly, this exhibition, in the artist’s hometown of Los Angeles is the first-ever complete presentation of this monumental project.
Tour time: 11am - 12pm

Join LA River Public Art Project exploring art, culture, and place along the LA River. In the spirit of Hyonaayn’ar, a relational word in Tongva that means both teacher and student, participants will delve into the river’s ephemeral histories and theoretical ecological futures while tracing a diversity of cultural responses to the river. Join us for a year of movement-based dialogues where everyone is a participant in this durational art action, a social sculpture that takes cues from our lead artist, the River -- also known as Paayme Paxaayt, in Tongva -- where the River is the primary teacher.
Guided walks every second Saturday of each month of 2023 -- along with some bonus tours on different days -- will visit important cultural sites starting with the sources of the river in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in January all the way to Long Beach in December.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
All tours include a 5% Land Usage Fee. Funds from this fee will cover compensation for a Tribal Elder or Culture Bearer to accompany most walks. Information about Land Usage Fees.
Refunds are available as credit for an alternate tour.
