River Raisin Watershed Council Plans First Annual Native Plant Sale in TecumsehOn Friday, May 30, River Raisin Watershed Council (RRWC) is bringing the plants of the future to Tecumseh – that is, the native plants that grew in this area before European colonists arrived.
“These are the plants of the future, not just the past, because they are essential to restoring and maintaining healthy, functioning local ecosystems,” said Lydia Lopez, RRWC Water Stewardship Coordinator. “Native plant species have been widely displaced by non-native species, which negatively affects pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Our goal is to restore biodiversity by educating people and making native plants easily available.”
RRWC is bringing together native plant vendors and environment-related organizations for an afternoon of shopping and information sharing – the first event of its kind in Lenawee. Attendees will learn about the importance of native plants and how to incorporate them into their existing landscape. For those who are new to gardening with native plants, Master Gardeners from the Tecumseh Little Garden Club will be on hand to answer questions and help with species selection. Kids’ activities are also planned.
“Including native plants in your yard is an effective way to help pollinators and other beneficial insects, and the birds that rely on them for food. It also opens up a whole new palette of plants for experienced gardeners, in contrast to the non-native species we’re used to seeing in garden centers,” Lopez said.
The sale takes place at RRWC headquarters (804 N. Evans Street, next to the A.J. Smith Rec Center, Tecumseh, Michigan). It runs 2pm–7:30pm on May 30 and admission is free. Pita Delight food truck will also be on site.
