The Episcopal Church's glossary defines Rite 1 as "The Rite 1 liturgies reflect the language and piety of the Elizabethan era and the first Book of Common Prayer, although the structure of these liturgies also reflects the influence of modern liturgical scholarship." In other words, the language is more Shakespearian in nature and it can be more personally reflective.
