About the Film

American Masters — Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It explores the star’s rich life and career, spanning more than 70 years. From her childhood in Puerto Rico and New York City, to her early Broadway successes and her defiance of Hollywood sexism and racism as a trailblazing Latina performer, to the iconic roles that won her the rare distinction of EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards), the film showcases the personal and professional resilience of a true star and the mark she has made on popular culture. Featuring vérité footage of Moreno today, archival footage of her memorable onscreen moments and appearances, reenactments of her childhood, and animation, and interviews with those close to her and performers she influenced, including Gloria Estefan, Morgan Freeman, Mitzi Gaynor, Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Longoria, Justina Machado, Terence McNally, Karen Olivo, as well as Norman Lear and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who are also executive producers on the film.

American Masters — Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It premieres on October 5 at 9pm on KQED 9 and streaming online.
