THE MUSIC & ARTS SERIES AT HAMLINE CHURCH PRESENTS

American Guild of Organists 2023 & 2024 Quimby Regional Competition for Young Organists winner Aaron Looney plays a solo recital on Hamline Church’s Casavant Pipe Organ with works by Bach, Dupré, and movements from Vierne’s Symphony No. 6. The Hamline Church Festival Chorus under the direction of Dr. David Kozisek, joins Aaron for Rheinberger’s Stabat Mater in g op. 138 and Brahms’ Geistliches Lied. Freewill offering. Reception to follow.

About the Artist:
Aaron Looney is currently a student at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota where he is a student of Dr. Catherine Rodland (organ). A native of Bridgewater, Virginia, Aaron’s musical interests began at the age of five on the piano before shifting to a passion for organ and choral music. Aaron performs regularly at St. Olaf and in the Twin Cities on the organ and has the privilege of singing with and managing the St. Olaf Choir. His aspirations are to continue to graduate school upon graduation from St. Olaf to pursue his masters and eventual doctoral degree in organ performance.

Aaron held a position as organist at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mount Sidney, Virginia for two years where he led worship as Music Minister. Prior to his position at Salem, he volunteered as organist at his home church in Dayton, Virginia. Aaron has also been fortunate to appear as a guest musician and substitute organist throughout Virginia and select churches in Minnesota. In the fall of 2021 Aaron joined the worship team at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Excelsior, Minnesota, where he holds a position as Associate Organist. Aaron was awarded second prize in the AGO Regional Organ Competition in 2023.

About Hamline Church's Pipe Organ:
The Casavant organ consists of two instruments built by this company. The Antiphonal Organ was installed in the rear balcony in 1972. This organ console consists of one manual and full pedal board. The pipes and chests are mounted on the rear wall on either side of the Samuel F. Kerfoot stained glass window. It contains 8 stops, 13 ranks, and 793 pipes. It can be played from the Chancel Organ console as well as from the console in the balcony.
The Chancel Organ, built in 1974, has a console of three manuals and a full pedal board. It has 39 stops, 52 ranks and 3,535 pipes, plus chimes, cymbelstern, and nachtigall. The Great division and part of the Pedal division are placed on either side of the George Henry Bridgman stained glass window on the front (chancel) wall. The Positiv division stands at the base of the same window and above the reredos. The remainder of Pedal division fits in the chamber to the right of the chancel. The Swell division is immediately behind the Pedal division.
Two digital stops, 32-foot Sub Bourdon and Posaune, were added to the Pedal division in 1995. It is a memorial to Ellen M. Erickson, given by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Wilbur (Chris) Donaldson. In 2000 the combination pistons were enlarged and converted to computerized controls. In 2001 a Nachtigall stop was added. Two new stops (16-foot Diapason and a 10⅔-foot Quintbass) and forty-four 16-foot open wood pipes were added to the Pedal division in 2014.
