Speakers and small group discussion on housing costs and affordability
About this Event

Do you worry about how you, your friends or your children will be able to afford housing in the future? Have you been listening to the debate about adding accessory dwelling units (“granny flats”) following the recent state legislation? Are you concerned about whether there is sufficient infrastructure such as water and parking to handle additional housing?

Come to this LWVSD event where you will hear two local experts discuss these questions and more. Then we’ll break into small groups and share opinions and strategies.

For the first half hour, two local experts will speak on opposing views:

Andrea Schlageter is the new Chair of the Community Planning Groups. She has been the Chair of the Ocean Beach Planning Board and is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in political science.

Geoffrey Hueter is a data science executive who is a leader in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and program management. He is one of the founders of Neighbors for a Better San Diego which is a grassroots organization that was started to protect neighborhoods from the development of apartment buildings in the backyards of single-family homes. He is a graduate of Harvey Mudd College and has a PhD in Physics from UCSD.

For the second hour, we will break into two different discussion groups led by LWV discussion leaders to discuss the debate and potential action steps.

We will meet on Wednesday, October 26 at 6:30 at the Central Library’s beautiful 9th floor Shiley Events Center with its view of the city and the harbor. The doors will open for social time at 6pm. We will have light snacks and beverages.

There is a parking garage under the library and your parking ticket can be validated on the first floor. There is also a nearby MTS stop. Once inside, follow signs to the elevators for the 9th floor.

The League recommends wearing masks at indoor events for the health and safety of all.
