For our November gathering we’ll be discussing Ripples of the Universe: Spirituality in Sedona, Arizona by Susannah Crockford (with the author joining us in person!) — a fascinating look at spirituality, class, inequality, ecology, race, food, conspiracy theories, and how people search for meaning and community in uncertain timesWe’re especially delighted that Susannah Crockford will be joining us in person for the discussion and some Q&A — a chance to chat with her, ask questions, and hear more about her work in a relaxed and informal way
Based on two years of immersive fieldwork, the book explores how spirituality in Sedona intersects with economics, identity, power, and ecology. It shows how people try to live differently, challenge mainstream systems, and navigate both hope and disillusionment in a world shaped by inequality and shifting values
Sedona has long been known as a spiritual destination — a magnet for people drawn to alternative healing, meditation, and deep engagement with the land. Likewise, Totnes has a strong reputation as a place where creative, ecological, and alternative cultures flourish - and is home to a vibrant New Age and holistic community. In both places, there is a creative tension between mainstream structures and people seeking other ways of being — which makes Ripples of the Universe especially relevant for Totnes, inviting us to reflect on how the spiritual, the political, and the ecological interweave in daily life
