Ken Chatfield will give an entertaining talk about a little known but alarming 1950's plan to turn Ringwood into a mega-town.In February 1954 London County Council had proposed to build a new town with a population of 40,000 in the New Forest, near Ringwood. This scheme was considered by the Ringwood & Fordingbridge Rural District Council at a meeting on Wednesday 10th February that year.
This talk is a little known story of just how close Ringwood came to being the site for a new town, which would have changed the surrounding area for ever. How did that arise – what was planned – and how was it stopped?
