Fifteen-time GRAMMY® winner Ricky Skaggs stands as one of the most influential artists in modern country music, a musician so impactful that Chet Atkins once said he “single-handedly saved country music.” A prodigy from Cordell, Kentucky, Skaggs played with Bill Monroe at age 6, appeared on TV with Flatt & Scruggs at 7, and launched his professional bluegrass career in 1971 with Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys. After key stints with the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and his own band Boone Creek, he shifted to mainstream country in the late 70s, joining Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band before earning 12 #1 hits and multiple CMA Awards—including Entertainer of the Year—during his Epic Records run.
His 1997 album Bluegrass Rules! marked a celebrated return to his roots, leading to a string of GRAMMY®-winning projects with Kentucky Thunder and the creation of Skaggs Family Records. Over the past decade, he’s been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Musicians Hall of Fame, IBMA Bluegrass Hall of Fame, National Fiddler Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame, and received the National Medal of Arts in 2020. More than 60 years after first picking up the mandolin, Skaggs remains a driving force in the roots revival, continually pushing boundaries while honoring the traditions that shaped him.
