Join us for a captivating hour-long exploration of the life and work of Arthur Middleton Reeves, a Richmond native whose legacy is deeply intertwined with our library's history. Viking and Medieval Norse Studies researcher, Zachary Melton from the University of Iceland, will tell the story of Reeves' fascinating life and his groundbreaking contributions to the discourse surrounding the Norse discovery of America.
You will learn about 19th-century theories about Vinland and the Norse sagas, and learn how Reeves challenged the prevailing narratives. We'll uncover his unique perspective and the tragic circumstances that shaped his legacy through excerpts from his letters and a dive into his life.
In memory of her husband and tragically lost son, Arthur, Caroline Middleton Reeves made a substantial donation to renovate the then Morrisson Library. This generous gift led to the library’s current name.
Don't miss this chance to learn about a remarkable Richmond native.
