Join us at the Waimea College Hall, on Wednesday 9th April, 6.30pm for a public science talk presented by Dr. Rob Langridge (GNS Science) and Associate Prof. Jamie Howarth (Victoria University of Wellington) to hear about the likely impacts of a large Alpine Fault earthquake in your region, and the research underway to help us be better prepared. While we can’t predict earthquakes, scientific research indicates there is a 75% probability of an Alpine Fault earthquake occurring in the next 50 years, and there is a 4 out of 5 chance that it will be a magnitude 8+ event. This is likely to have major short and long-term impacts.
The AF8 Roadshow: The Science Beneath Our Feet brings Alpine Fault science and hazard impact information to South Island communities, in areas likely to be affected by an Alpine Fault earthquake. Bring your questions. First in, best seated!
All welcome | Free admission
The AF8 Roadshow is hosted by the 6 South Island Emergency Management Groups and sponsored by NHC Toka Tū Ake.
We are supported by our science partners: QuakeCoRE: NZ Centre for Earthquake Resilience, GNS Science, University of Otago University of Canterbury, University of Auckland, Victoria University Wellington.
