Each month, we spotlight a single album, offering an in-depth exploration of its music, the artists behind it, and the captivating stories surrounding its creation.
This isn’t just a listening session; it’s an immersive journey into the essence of the album, guided by two industry veterans who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Dave Swallow, founder of AAA and a renowned sound engineer who has worked with legendary artists like Amy Whitehouse and Erasure, will co-host the event alongside Phil Argent. Together, they’ll provide unparalleled insights and anecdotes, making each session a memorable experience.
February’s Album of the Month at AAA: Play by Moby
Play (1999) by Moby is a groundbreaking album that defined an era, blending electronic music with gospel, blues, and folk influences. Known for its innovative use of vocal samples and emotive soundscapes, this iconic album features timeless tracks like Porcelain, Natural Blues, and Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?. Each song offers a unique journey, seamlessly merging soulful tradition with modern electronica.
Renowned for its cultural impact, Play marked a turning point in music, becoming one of the first albums to achieve global recognition through its extensive use in films, advertisements, and TV. It remains a testament to Moby’s ability to bridge the past and future of music.
Play includes standout tracks that showcase its emotional depth and genre-defying brilliance:
- Porcelain – A hauntingly beautiful track that captures the essence of vulnerability and introspection.
- Natural Blues – A poignant blend of gospel and electronic beats, evoking themes of struggle and hope.
- Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? – A deeply emotional piece with its aching melodies and resonant vocal samples.
- Honey – An infectious opening track that sets the tone with its dynamic rhythm and bluesy flair.
- Run On – A modern reinterpretation of a traditional gospel tune, filled with energy and spiritual fervor.
Join us on Sunday, 2nd February 2025, at 10 am for a full-album listening session and a curated exploration of tracks inspired by Play and its legacy. It’s a perfect opportunity to dive into Moby’s world and experience the timeless magic of Play.
