Way back in 1987, Rich Mattson escaped the fabled Iron Range of Minnesota toward the end of his teenage years. His destination: The Minneapolis music scene. The first band he saw at the 7th Street Entry was the Replacements and the first band in the First Avenue mainroom was Husker Du. Rich's first band was like a new wave combination of the two, fathered by Neil Young. Years later, after his groups the Glenrustles, Ol' Yeller, and then the Tisdales fizzled out, he hooked up with Germaine Gemberling. Germaine's punk-rocker-from-Minneapolis-turned-north-country-songstress got Rich hook, line and sinker back in 2010 and they've been making sweet music ever since. 12 records later they're still at it with 10 years and 6 of those albums under their belt as Rich Mattson and the Northstars. With Rich as the main writer, daydream believer, van driver, producer, studio owner (his day job), and band leader, Germaine contributes cosmic folk-rock masterpieces like blobs of clay for the Northstars' production strokes. The band's current lineup consists of Chris Petrack (a retired fireman and neighbor who just happens to be a fantastic drummer) on the drums and bassist Calvin Lund of Duluth MN jam band extraordinaire SaltyDog.
