Winchester College War Cloister
The memorial at Winchester College was the vision of headmaster Montague J Rendall to honour Wykehamists who fell in the First World War and was built between 1922 – 1924 to a scheme by renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker. The classical architectural composition of the cloister echoes the mediaeval cloister of William of Wykeham and is ingeniously conceived, enriched internally by countless painted and gilded symbols, regimental badges, and arms, carved into the fabric of the cloister walls and roof frames. Fine memorial and notable artworks by eminent sculptors Sir Charles Wheeler and Alfred Turner were included.
Radley House Partnership have recently completed a complex project achieving a successful and delicate balance of preventative conservation and representation of the War Cloister memorial to the highest standards appropriate to Rendall’s original vision.
Radley House Conservation Architects, Jeremy Poll and Fiona Hudd, will guide the walking tour of the cloister giving a unique opportunity to discuss the technical challenges and philosophical issues involved and to take a close look at the exceptional work carried out by specialist contractor Sally Strachey Conservation.

If the RIBA has to postpone or cancel the event the booker is entitled to a full refund of the ticket price less any Eventbrite fees.

Parking: There is no available parking at Winchester College. There is plenty of parking centrally in Winchester within walking distance to the college and The Green Man.
