About this Event

Join RIBA Somerset with Somerset Wildlife Trust to enjoy a guided walk and talk and meet up with fellow local architects.

You'll hear about the conservation work Somerset Wildlife Trust are currently doing on the Somerset Levels including increasing biodiversity through land management activities, how they are working to protect peat landscapes and to discuss Biodiversity Net Gain.

There will also be plenty of opportunity for discussion, refreshments and to enjoy the beautiful Somerset countryside.

Agenda

  • 9.30am - Arrival at Avalon Marshes Centre for tea and coffee. Breakfast is also available at the café
  • 10am - Introduction from Somerset Wildlife Trust who will talk about the Peat Story and about current work at their reserves, Westhay and Westhay South
  • 10.30am - Leave for Westhay Reserve
  • 10.40-12.15pm - Guided walk at Westhay Reserve
  • 12.30pm -Return to Avalon Marshes Centre

A range of lunch options are available from the café if anyone would like to stay on.

Note that we will need to travel between Westhay Reserve and the Avalon Marshes Centre by car, but we will initiate car sharing to reduce impact.


About Somerset Wildlife Trust

Somerset Wildlife Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts working across the UK.

With the support of volunteers they manage over 1700 hectares of land for wildlife and people in Somerset. Somerset Wildlife Trust also work with other organisations and landowners to protect and connect wildlife sites across the county and inspire local communities and young people to care for wildlife where they live

They are a science-led movement focused on restoring habitats to support a wide range of wildlife and restore natural processes that are essential for healthy landscapes, and provide vital services such as clean air and water, food, carbon absorption and flood alleviation.


Preparing for the day

The event will go ahead unless there is extreme weather. If that is the case, the event will be rescheduled. Please note that the guided walk may take us through wet and uneven ground so please be sure to be prepared with waterproofs and suitable footwear.
