Our second subscription concert of the season features the energetic rhythms and dances of Latin America — tracing its roots to Spain and its many musical influences, all the way to the dance halls of Cuba and Mexico City.
We begin the night with a tour of the nightclubs of Mexico City in Gabriela Ortiz’s Antropolis — booming with energy and an opening timpani solo, it sets the tone perfectly for the evening. Joaquin Turina’s Sinfonia Sevillana takes us on a multi-movement adventure through the musical heart of Spain, as we explore different dances and folk melodies.
The second half opens with a tribute to our veterans for Veteran’s Day weekend, as we perform Bob Lowden’s arrangement of Armed Forces Salute. The orchestra then performs the energetic and iconic sounds of Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, in a great arrangement by Maurice Peress, and we close the concert with Maurice Ravel’s Bolero. A piece that needs no introduction, it’s a celebration of every section of the orchestra and its musicians!
This concert is sponsored by Lee and Nancy Zimmerman and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.
