Rhymes on the River: Pre-Juneteenth Poetry Slam

Rhymes on the River: Juneteenth Poetry Slam is a pre-Juneteenth poetry competition where the power of words meets the beauty of the downtown Memphis riverfront. Hosted by Comedian Rob Love, poets prepare for a unique poetry night in honor of Juneteenth. The top youth poet (17 and under) and the top adult poet (18 and older) will win cash prizes. All poets must share poems on the Juneteenth theme. For the poets who advance to round 2 (final round), they’ll be able to share poems on any topic. No props or music allowed. All poems must be clean (without cursing or vulgar language). This competition will use cumulative scoring, which means the poet with the most points at the end of both rounds, will win 1st place. This year, we have added a color theme, so we want to see you rocking your yellow, red, and green attire or one of the three colors as your primary color. There will also be Juneteenth tshirt vendors on site, in case you want to get your gear on the spot.

What to expect:

Seating will be available for the first 75 guests. Early ticket purchase is encouraged and preferred so that we can make adjustments and add more seating, if needed. This event is expected to sell out, and we will be doing Al we can to add to the customer experience so that it is a pleasant one. Tickets are available via the Eventbrite link. Some guests may prefer to enjoy poetry in the comfort of their own lawn chairs, so it is also welcomed. Bring your own, if you prefer.

There will be a variety of vendors on deck, including food & drink vendors, so this event will be a one-stop-shop for guests. The poetry and river view are bonuses. There will be parking garages open to the public, as well as some free parking on neighboring streets. Just give yourself an early start so you can find good parking, accordingly. Most parking options are within close proximity of the park.
