Art Lande and Ken Walker's root system spans connections from Little Rock, Arkansas, to the history of Jazz in Colorado (The Pec, Vartan's, Jazz Works, Dazzle, the West End Tavern, Greeley and Telluride Jazz Festivals), to supporting each other through serious health challenges. It is long overdue to play music together again. While Ken has played with numerous jazz greats (luckily for us, he turned down Benny Golson’s invite to join his band and move to New York), in addition to Ken's many Denver area recordings and festival shows, the "Ken Walker Sextet (featuring Peter Sommer)" has played monthly concerts at Dazzle for years. His bass playing features a big, rich sound, great rhythmic ideas, and a beautiful way of exposing the capacities of the instrument in all ranges. The way Ken and Art play together is special, somehow solid and adventurous at the same time.
Clare and Pete are beloved in our community for providing us and sustaining the Muse Performance Space where sincere and skillfully played music can be played and be heard. They are also wonderful musicians who have played everywhere and with everyone in Colorado for decades. (Check out Clare Church‘s recording "You're More", a truly great record.)
The reunion of these musicians and good friends will feature jazz standards played freshly in the precarious balance between respect for the history and the willingness to seize the present moment. Among the many more deep roots is Art and Clare sharing 21 years in the Boy Girl Band, and Art and Ken playing together on Ron Miles' "Witness" recording. These strong roots provide a profound level of trust between the band members that promise a concert that you don’t want to miss.
