A young Oxford student tutored by C.S. Lewis, came to be known as the Benedictine priest and monk, Bede Griffiths (1906–93). Bede is best known for his pioneering work in Southern India, bringing together the Christian and Hindu contemplative traditions; teaching how humanity can survive the modern social, economic, ecological and faith crises . . . and emerge into ‘a new earth and a new heaven’. The late Cardinal Basil Hume described Bede as a "mystic in touch with absolute beauty and love." Bede was clear that an experience of God, known in the Hindu Vedas as ‘Advaita’, is an experience of love in which two become one without losing their distinct identities; a Beatitude and blessing upon the pure in heart, who live the beatific vision (Matthew 5:8). Beatitude from Latin (beatus) means 'blissful'. The one who is blissful is blessed and seeks after Christ mindedness (1 Corinthians 2:16). We will discover more about Bede Griffiths, and his teachings, on this day.
