We are excited to host the work of August Houston and Sukanya Ray, two New York City- and Boston-based photographers who explore the dichotomous themes rooted in their southern upbringing. _________
August Houston is a Filipino-American photographer and graphic designer born and raised in the South. Photography began as an extension of independence and a glimpse into his life beyond familial expectations. Design equipped him to manipulate his work into more honest portrayals of emotion. His work has explored his conflict with truth, love, and failure, and currently contemplates the privacy and sanctity of self and space, internal and external.
August now lives in Brooklyn, New York, as a full-time graphic designer. He has previously worked as a fine-art photographic printer, with notable clients including Lenny Kravitz, Sam Youkilis, Maria Qamar, and Jean-Pierre Laffont as well as for Fotografiska, Lensculture, and the Aperture Foundation.
His work was previously exhibited at The Other Art Fair.
__________
Sukanya Ray explores how memories and natural phenomena can influence one's perceived place in the world.
Born and raised in the American South, she developed a deep interest in the various portrayals of divinity between her Hindu faith and the surrounding evangelical environment. Her work reflects a lifetime of curiosity towards belief and truth, often articulated via natural light and the constructed space.
Sukanya is based between Boston and New York City. She holds a BFA in Design from Northeastern University.
