About this Event
Join us for an illustrated talk by architect Benedict O’Looney for a behind the scenes look at the recent restoration of our long-overlooked Art Deco station.
The Richmond Society was delighted to present an Award for the restoration of the station’s Art Deco façade and interior concourse. The works were a collaborative project between South Western Railway, the Railway Heritage Trust, Network Rail and Richmond Council.
Benedict’s other conservation projects include the renovation of Peckham Rye Station for Network Rail and Southwark Council; new shopfronts for the restoration of Findlater’s Corner, London Bridge; a women and children’s wing for the Croydon Mosque; and a war memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum commemorating the Muslim soldiers who fought for Britain in the First and Second World Wars.
After obtaining his Master of Architecture degree from Yale University, Benedict worked with Grimshaw and Alsop Architects, taught architecture history and sketching for 11 years at the Architectural Association; Kent School of Architecture; Canterbury School of Architecture; and for New York University’s London program.
He is chairman of Southwark’s Conservation Areas Advisory Group, a member of the Victorian Society’s Southern Building Committee and a past president of the London Sketch Club.
