About this Event
As part of Climate Week and our interactive Scavenger Hunt, come join in the continuing stewardship and tranformation of Soundview Park to support the living ecology and the community simultaneously. We're partnering with Friends of Soundview Park and Bronx River Alliance in community day to remove litter (as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day), remove invasive species, and plant native species to help protect, improve and restore this beautiful waterfront park.
Bronx River Alliance has been cultivating a revitalized and vibrant shoreline from the ground up for over 50 years. Often considered the north star of community-based land and water stewardship in the city, we are excited to celebrate their work as part of Climate Week and our interactive scavenger hunt.
Called the “Gateway to the Bronx River,” Soundview Park is right where the Bronx River opens into the East River. Once entirely composed of marshland, it was filled in the early 20th century to what is now City park land. Like many ecologies In New York City, it was neglected and worse for much of the last 200 years. Now, with renewed stewardship, the park both satisfies its community nexus for sports, activities and gatherings, while emerging a more natural ecology.
Show up at the 10a start and help us in a global cleanup, where we’ll gather trash that otherwise ends up in the river. There, we’ll learn about the history and amazing work of transformation and reclamation in the last 50 years. Along the way, we’ll offer missions as part of the scavenger hunt.
Please wear protective, weather appropriate clothing that can get dirty – long pants, closed toe shoes, and a hat. Please also bring a reusable water bottle! We will provide all gloves and tools. We will also provide coolers of water, snacks, and lunch after our stewardship efforts.
