Houston Contemporary Dance Company presents Restore, featuring choreographic works by McKinley Willis, Peter Chu, Alexander Anderson and Kia Smith.
“Restore” features a premiere by Dallas based artist McKinley Willis and 4yous by acclaimed artist and chuthis. Artistic Director Peter Chu. The concert also includes works by NYC based artistic associate with Gibney Dance and former member of Nederlands Dans Theatre Alexander Anderson, South Chicago Dance Theatre Artistic Director Kia Smith and Dallas Black Dance Theatre member Carmen Cage.
“Restore” will feature the Houston Contemporary Dance Company presenting new and signature works from our past four seasons as well as a guest appearance by our second company, Houston Contemporary 2. This performance will include a premiere by McKinley Willis who is a Dallas native and graduate of the Booker T. Washington HSPVA and recipient of the Texas Commission on the Arts Young Masters scholarship. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma and has performed with Bruce Wood Dance Project and is currently a member of Dallas Black Dance Theatre. HCDC is excited to bring the choreographic voice of Willis to our Houston audiences.
“Restore” also features 4yous, a work by acclaimed artist Peter Chu that examines the inner dilemma of an aging individual. The piece uses mirrored, physical movements with intense liquid-like energy to illuminate ideas of distrust in self-perception and a struggle of the ability to function. Chu is a graduate of the Juilliard School, and recipient of the Hector Zaraspe Prize for choreography, a Capezio A.C.E. award, and the Hubbard Street Dance International Commission Project. In addition to his performance career with notable companies including BJM Dance and Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot, Chu directs his own company chuthis. and served as rehearsal director for the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater 2.
This performance also includes a forthcoming work from NYC based artist Alexander Anderson who is also a graduate of the Juilliard School, has performed with both Nederlands Dans Theatre 1 and 2, and most recently with the Gibney Company in NYC. Additionally, the Restore program includes two more exceptional female choreographers: South Chicago Dance Theatre Artistic Director Kia Smith and Dallas Black Dance Theatre member Carmen Cage.
Houston Contemporary Dance Company is a fresh, young arts organization whose mission is to ignite passion for contemporary dance by providing world-class professional repertory concert performances and community engagement activities that are accessible to all regardless of race, culture, sexual orientation, gender, gender variance, or nationality. Led by founder and artistic director Marlana Doyle and drawing from her over 20 years of curatorial experience, HCDC is excited to continue to build on a diverse body of repertory dance works created by a collection of highly skilled choreographers. HCDC aims to be a vital component in not only keeping contemporary dance alive in Houston, but to firmly position Houston as a cultural center for dance by building broad participation and support for contemporary dance.
